Summary: Art for Desperately Seeking Someone, written by [livejournal.com profile] cleflink (AO3 | DW) and created for the 2017 [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang challenge (my second entry for this year's round! You can check out my first entry here!).

READ THE STORY! AO3 | LJ | DW

STORY SUMMARY: After the dramatic implosion of yet another relationship, Jensen is ready to swear off love forever. Instead, he ends up trying to find a new boyfriend with what is perhaps the most unorthodox method known to man. He’ll never live it down if it actually works.

As it turns out, Fate has a funny way of showing him that what he thought he'd been missing all along… isn't quite what he expected.

ONCE UPON A TIME...
It all started out with a tweet. In case that link ever stops working, here it [mostly] is:

@iwinsoiwin said: "i can't quite find the right wording, but these should be on a missing poster for Jared's shoulder with the outline just under Jensen's head" re: another tweet of a set of images where Jensen was standing with his head cocked to the side, including the one of him with the umbrella which was also originally a tweet, posted by Kathryn Newton (SPN's Claire Novak).

This was just a little bit before art submissions were due for SPN_RB, so I was in ART PROMPT mode... and I just fell in love with this idea. Straight-up asked Amy if it'd be okay if I stole her idea to make an art prompt. She said YES pretty enthusiastically, so that's exactly what I did.

So first, let's start with:

THE ORIGINAL PROMPT

Title: 'cause the spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly
Prompt Description: "A different approach to finding the right fit."

Ohhh my god. I had SO MUCH FUN creating the art for this collaboration. (And, even though I didn't get to read all of Cleflink's AWESOME fic before posting this (because real life can be a real bitch sometimes), it was indeed a great collaboration and I'd work with her again anytime because a) CLEFLINK, OMG, and b) she's just as awesome as her fics. And that is saying something.)

This is probably one of the most... complex sets of art I've done for a challenge yet, mainly due to the mixed media nature of it.

First, I made an actual MISSING poster. This was done, sometimes painfully, using Corel Painter Essentials 5. (It's a program meant more for painting and less for this sort of graphic design/document creation, but I made do. HUGE shout-out to quickreaver who helped beta this as I created it, and shared some very helpful tips along the way. If you think it looks awesome, half or more of the credit there is due to her.)

For the next step, I actually printed out the poster! I felt just like I was living the fic! Okay, maybe not, but it was a lot of fun to scout out places where such a poster might be found, and then take a million pictures of it. I ended up finding a little bulletin board at a local restaurant/business complex that worked perfectly. I used pictures from that shoot in both the prompt that I submitted for claims (see above) and then again in the header banner (also above). I used Picasa to edit the coloring and effects on both, and added words to the header in Corel.

As Cleflink and I discussed the direction that the fic might go, I kept getting more and more ideas for art. Sometimes they kept me awake at night to the point that I would have to email her (from my phone, from bed, which I usually hate doing) as soon as possible just so I could sleep! This final image was one such idea.

Again - SO much fun making this! This time I printed out just Jared (thank you SO MUCH to gluedwithgold for using your Photoshop magic to get rid of the messy background that was originally behind him) and then cut him out. (I felt a little bit like I was channeling my inner Beelikej, all the paper I was cutting that night!) Then I cut Jensen's section from the poster and tucked Jared behind him. Even broke out the glue stick and colored paper. Felt like I was back in elementary school and it felt good. In an inspired moment, I added the little heart from the poster (from in front of Jensen's name) and pasted that in with J2 as well.

Then I put the collage in a frame I already had just lying around, cleaned off my own nightstand, switched my super froofy lampshade for a more neutral one, dragged another lamp in from the living room so I'd have better light... added a few "accessories"... and then took about another billion pics. The final image, as seen below, was once again edited in Picasa.

One of my initial fears with creating an art prompt so unlike most of my other works was - how was I going to create more art that fit the same style as my original piece? Which is how I ended up taking EVEN MOAR PICTURES, this time of one of the little tear-off strips with Jensen's phone number. Some, like the ones at the coffee shop (which I took while on a lovely fangirl date with Alyndra), could be from Jared's POV - maybe he'd seen the poster, taken Jensen's number... and then carried that little slip of paper around with him as he tried working up the courage to actually call.

Others, like the ones of the slips lying on the ground, would represent numbers that had been taken but either lost or abandoned, symbolizing how not all of Jensen's experiences as a result of this unusual date-finding method were winners.

In the end, I was just kind of bummed that I hadn't found a way to use these images, so I picked a few of my favorites, edited them in Picasa, and then made "dividers" out of them. The J2 divider is a result of me going a little overboard, probably, but I decided to include it anyway, in case Cleflink wanted to use it.

The push-pin divider was the first idea I had when I imagined a divider for this fic... but editing it in Corel was incredibly challenging, and I'm not really all that pleased with how it turned out. But I still like the thought of it!

TL;DR THANK YOUS:

To my amazing author, Cleflink, for not only choosing my art, but choosing me so quickly and eagerly. You sure know how to make an artist feel special!! I can't wait to read the bits of the fic that I missed; I'm sure I'll love it just as much as I adore everything else of yours I've ever read. You're amazing, and I'm still so EFFING PSYCHED that I got to work with you!

To Quickreaver, Non_tiembo_mala, and Gluedwithgold (it looks SO WEIRD to capitalize your names like that, lol!)... for all your help and feedback and encouragement along the way! I always have new things to learn, and you all are great teachers (and even greater friends) ♥

And last but not least, to VIEWERS LIKE YOU. Anyone who reads the fic, views the art, and enjoys it in some way. This is for you, and I hope you LOVE it. Be sure to drop Cleflink some love on any of her posts, and I'd love to hear from you as well! THANK YOU. ♥♥♥

This is absolutely adorable and AWESOME. What a fun project you made yourself, heehee!
First of all I'm amazed at the result you got in Corel, I know how much of a fight it is to work with a program designed for other purposes, WELL DONE!
I love that you made the art actual physical items and that you put it out there in the real world \o/ (I once made a bulletinboard myself, but you even went outside for the ultimate authentic feel, so much kudos for that! Your photography is brilliant <3
Oh and the missing poster itself looks cool too (JENSEN'S HEART, *my heart*) and I love that you shared the whole process from the spark of the idea to the final execution and your fandom experience.
I SO ENJOY YOUR BABBLING;)

This is such a wonderful prompt premise, and I loved the mixed media art you've created! It adds such a 'realistic' feel to the prompt, and as always it's really interesting reading how it all came to light. Thank you for sharing :)

Done with the fic, and now I'm over here to have a look at the amazing art that inspired it all. OH MY GOD, I'M SO IN LOVE WITH THE TEAR-OFF STRIPS ON THE GROUND AND FOUND LYING AROUND together with your explanation that it's either Jared's strip or strips of dates that didn't work out for whatever reasons. Such a perfect idea.

And all the work you put into the Missing poster. KUDOS! I love it. All of it, tbh! Thank you for sharing this with us! <3

I *loved* your art! And the steps to creating it you shared, and loved that you printed it out! I just picture you with the poster clutched in hand, looking for places to hang it--

This really added to my enjoyment of the story!

first of all, the art is completely adorable. your original prompt looks like a poster for a meet-cute romcom, and i mean that in the most complimentary way possible. it's so hopeful and cute. i mean, jensen with the umbrella is the best. and second, i love how dedicated you were, with the photos and the collages and all the media and even rearranging your dresser. it all makes me want to read the fic!

Aww, this is all amazing stuff! I admit when you first told me at the coffeeshop what you were doing, it was hard for me to picture how it would turn out, meaning it turned out more awesome than I could have imagined! I love the fallen leaves, they're kinda symbolic of the whole beginning/middle of the story when you think about it!

And also because I can't believe no one up to now has mentioned it, when I looked more closely at the bedside table pic on this post and saw the bottle of Astroglide! *sporfles* genius, sheer genius, I love it!

I was finally able to read cleflink's fic just now, it is most excellent and the fic and art together go really well!

Oh, this is so nice. I love the blurriness in the main banner, it feels very 'city and busy' and Jensen holding that umbrella with the cut out is just adorable. Really lovely set. I like the coffee and the name tags. Just wonderful work.
