THE ORIGINAL PROMPT

Title: The [Not So] Little Mer[Man]
Prompt Description: “Pretty much just what you see: human!Dean/Jensen and merman!Sam/Jared. Despite my silly title, not actually meant to parallel/parody The Little Mermaid. I’m just… into merpeople lately, I guess XP"
On the tail (heh, tail XP) of
j2_reversebang - my first reversebang challenge for which I submitted TWO art prompts - I was a little at a loss for new things to draw that might inspire a story. A lot of really random ideas crossed my mind, but I think I ended up going with this specific train of thought because it just sounded like fun. I have a young cousin (I believe she just turned… 12?) who is really into mermaids right now, and I drew one for her birthday card last September, so I suppose that could be considered my inspiration, lol. In the end, it gave me an excuse to play with painting another watery landscape, which I love, and also a reason (though who needs one, really?) to draw shirtless boys.
Even though it’s Sam and Dean who are pictured, I kept the Supernatural elements (Dean’s tattoo and amulet) on a separate layer in Corel Painter so it could be easily deleted, if desired, and I submitted the prompt under the “Either” category. I knew it wasn’t the most original idea (I’m an avid fanfic reader, and I can think of at least three merman J2 AUs - not including other partial-sea-creature variants - off the top of my head right now), but I couldn’t recall having read a fic yet where it was Sam or Dean who was the merman. For that, I’m really glad that my author, Sherri, decided to stick with the SPN spin; I was hoping for a new (to me, at least) angle to a somewhat familiar trope.
Sherri definitely delivered on creating something unique! Of all the existing storylines in the SPN canon, she picked what is probably one of the most unpopular ones (for Sam!girls and Wincest shippers alike, I think) - Amelia! - and took it in a completely different direction. When she told me she was thinking of making Amelia a witch who curses Sam, I was definitely intrigued! Throw in overprotective Dean, fresh from Purgatory, desperate to find and save his baby brother, and voila! You’ve got possibly a more believable version of events than in the actual show! XP (Even with Sam as a merman. Hey, it’s totally supernatural! The wincest though… that probably wouldn’t have made it to the screen, at least not explicitly ;))
So yeah. Basically, my art was created just for something fun. And as the header/title banner is just a section of the original painting with some text over it, I won’t bother talking about it; it’s pretty self explanatory, lol. I hope you enjoy my art, and the story it inspired!

Hey, tropes are tropes for a reason. I love mermaid fic;)
Also also: it makes me so happy to read about the creative process and people having a good time at the RB. <3

Date: 2017-02-27 02:11 am (UTC)Don't get me wrong - I loooooove me some tropes... I just feel so unoriginal when I play into them for prompts! Makes me even more nervous they won't get picked. But
You are one of the people who inspires me to talk about 'my process' at all - I too enjoy hearing and seeing how creativity happens. I briefly saw your post for your own RB prompt, and I look forward to giving it more proper attention soon!
Thank you again for the lovely comment ❤
