Art: Ride with you upon the wind (Masterpost)
Title: Ride with you upon the wind
Rating: G (NC-17 for fic)
Fandom: Supernatural RPF
Pairing: Jensen/Jared
Characters: Jared Padalecki
Summary: Art for Ride with you upon the wind, written by
soy_em (AO3 | tumblr) and created for the 2018
spn_reversebang challenge.

STORY SUMMARY: Jared’s been riding through the country for months now, unwilling to stop anywhere for more than a night. But when a thunderstorm forces him to accept shelter from a mysterious green-eyed man, he finds himself questioning his journey as well as wondering who Jensen really is.

THE ORIGINAL PROMPT

Title: Riding Out the Rain
Prompt Description: Jared is on a long motorcycle ride when he gets caught in a downpour. He takes shelter under the nearest overpass to wait until the storm is over. Hopefully he won't be stuck for too long...

I was so thrilled when I saw that soy_em had claimed my art. I'd recently gotten into her other J2 fics during the 2017 RB/xmas exchange season and loved them, so I knew she'd write something great. I am so happy with the story she came up with! I'll admit it took a slightly different turn than I had expected, but I love love love the final story. And it seems pretty appropriate that she came up with something so unexpected, considering how nicely that parallels Jared's experience in the fic X'D
Unfortunately with all my many other challenge commitments seeming to happen all at once, I didn't create another piece for this [more than deserving!!] fic that was as detailed as my original prompt, but I did create a few accompanying pieces, shown below.
BANNERS
Using different parts of the original, full art piece, I created three title banners for Em to choose from and use at her discretion. The largest is the one I chose to use at the top of this post. I erased the concrete wall that was behind Jared and filled in more of that stormy sky. All art for this collaboration was created using Corel Painter Essentials 5 and my Wacom tablet.
The two smaller (though still quite large) headers are basically just cropped portions of the prompt piece, though in the one with Jared I did add a little extra graffiti to the column. The font of the title is called "airstream" (like those old, silver travel trailers, you know?) which seemed to fit Jared's need to be out on the road.
"Small" header:

"Medium" header:

Once I finally was able to read through the full fic, and Em had posted this little snippet from William Butler Yeats' play 'The Land of Heart's Desire', I knew I wanted to make some sort of banner for that, too. The title of the fic came from this poem. I enjoyed getting the opportunity to draw something sunny and colorful and cheerful to contrast the gloom of my initial prompt. Adding the road stretching along the rolling hills felt like it fit the ending of the fic just perfectly as Jared and Jensen embraced the dynamic of their new life together.
Ending banner:

DIVIDER

For the divider, I was inspired by that moment when they're walking Jared's bike back to Jensen's house, where Jensen makes Jared stop to look at some mushrooms he'd found. It felt a little like a turning point in the fic - possibly because it's when Jared really starts to suspect there might be something not-quite-human about Jensen. Jensen's enthusiasm for the mushrooms was also, like, really endearing, so yeah. Mushrooms!
THANK YOUS:
First, obviously, to my wonderful author, Em. It was such a pleasure to get to work with you! Thank you for the delightful gift of your story, and the enjoyment of a successful collaboration together. I'd love to do it again anytime! <3
Second, to
quickreaver and marietwist for all the awesome art tips (and one epic save on Mary's part that we shall not speak of) and handholding as I worked on creating the initial monster of a piece. I do hope some of your wisdom stuck ;) My art is always better for your input.
To my many friends on twitter - other RB authors with whom I couldn't share my art (because claims and secrets) who cheered me on the whole way, other friends who joined me for #SeptemberSprints as we struggled to make our deadlines together, and just in general the wonderful people I've met through this community who never cease to support and encourage me - thank you <3
To the mods (QR, AMB, Bee) for running this beast and making it such a great challenge to keep participating in. You ladies are rockstars.
AND ULTIMATELY - TO VIEWERS LIKE YOU. Thank you so much for always taking the time to look at my work, for commenting and leaving love when you like it. I hope you love soy_em's story just as much as I did, and that you enjoyed my art (and rambling about it) as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! See you next challenge :-*

The following art post contains potential SPOILERS for soy_em's lovely fic, so I highly suggest you
READ THE STORY ON AO3!
first to get the best overall experience of our collaboration.
